In 1949, ten Rhine-tugs were built in France. The 113 foot steamships operated by the French state and must have towed thousands of ships along European waterways. One of these ships was the 'Arc', named, perhaps, for the Arch of Noach. In the 1980s, the 'Arc' began its new life as a pleasure yacht but, not until 2003, had she been completely transformed to become the luxurious ship that she is today: the Polycarpus. The letters of the ship's old name, Arc, come back in her new name. Polycarpus means 'many-seeded' or fertile and was also the name of a martyr-saint in early Christianity. State-of-the-art technology and equipment and comfortable facilities do not, fortunately, detract from the character that half a century of history have given this yacht. As a result, the Polycarpus has a personality and charisma that you will not find on other pleasure yachts. |
